Animal Welfare & Biosecurity

Vital to Industry Confidence

The VFF is committed to the continuous improvement of Victoria’s animal welfare regulations and our strong biosecurity system.

Victorian farmers produce word class animal products under world-leading animal welfare regulations. Farmers care for their livestock and how they are managed and handled throughout the supply chain.

Important to the protection of livestock and crops is a strong biosecurity system that ensures the traceability of animals and swift response to biosecurity threats. Exotic pest plants and animal pose a destructive threat to agriculture. Maintaining a strong biosecurity system is vital to industry confidence.

Advocates for Good Animal Welfare

Farmers are leading advocates for good animal welfare, and good animal welfare is essential for farm productivity.

Victoria maintains world-leading animal welfare regulations and farmers are committed to continuing to ensure these regulations promote good animal welfare outcomes.

Farmers recognise consumers want to know that their food has been produced in adherence to animal welfare regulations. The VFF is currently undertaking the Developing Community Understanding of Agriculture project for the Victorian Government that seeks to understand community views of agriculture and deliver a communications campaign to help to address any misnomers or knowledge gaps.

Victoria is currently consulting on a new animal welfare act for Victoria that would replace the current Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986.

Veterinary Chemicals for Agriculture

Agricultural and veterinary chemicals are vital for the productivity and competitiveness of Victorian agriculture.

The VFF works to ensure farmers continue to have access to safe and effective chemicals and that their production, transport, sale, use and disposal are appropriately regulated.

The APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority) regulates the supply and sale of agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Australia. The Victorian Government is responsible for regulating the use of these chemicals.

Victoria’s Biosecurity System

Biosecurity threats pose a significant risk to the productivity and prosperity of Victorian agriculture. A well-resourced and functional biosecurity system is essential for the protection of Victoria’s agricultural industries from exotic pests and diseases.

The VFF advocates for continued investment in Victoria’s biosecurity system. Only through continued investment can Victoria’s agricultural industries be protected from the threat of diseases such as Foot and mouth disease, Q Fever, Bluetongue virus and Anthrax.

The Victorian Government is currently reviewing Victoria’s biosecurity system. More information can be found at Strengthening Victoria’s Biosecurity System.
